Chain Link and Personal Projects
When you start making images seriously, you focus on mechanics, technique, making a usable image. As time goes on that becomes automatic. You know your camera inside and out, techniques are automatic based on the shoot of the day. What comes next?
Personal projects are a great way to expand your abilities. Focusing on a subject or style or images of a specific place over time. There are so many themes that can emerge from your imagination. Lately i’ve been exploring chain link. It’s everywhere. From construction sites to schools, baseball fields and so much more, are surrounded by chain link. My concept is to capture the view beyond the chain link but incorporate it into the image. As I wander the world I notice these locations more because of this focus.
The first image above was years ago. I’ve been drawn to these types of images for a while. It made sense to start a. personal project surrounding this type of image. Now when I wander I have an eye out for chain link. The idea is to capture the view, whatever that may be, beyond the fence. Almost challenging the barrier and capturing something that seems out of bounds or off limits as the fence implies.
So this will continue. I’m thinking of creating. book or zine of these images after some time. I will continue to see the world through chain link and share it with you .
Until next time,
John
